As I looked around I find that the broken down old mansions that were
around my old college have been restored, little neighborhoods that
once housed people who eeeked out a living are now grown into shops and
apartments. Beauty abounds and the mid west seems to be growing in
diversity beyond the big city government and college centric past
arenas. Gone are the thugs that dominated the country picnics. The
highways got paved nearly as well as in other states too.
Somewhere along the way, I held on to an old ideal that I had about
home theater and good sound equals a life well lived. Even if a little
rain must fall into all abodes. These days it seems like things just
don't last as long as they did in that late 60's 70's and 80's era of
ever present new sounds and rhythms. Thus the necessity of writing a
simple book that brackets the parameters and functions that will, if
they have not already, replace the older Detroit / Nashville /
International with more hollywood deco style delivery - ever more
coming to us from the internet, the sky, and recorded high definition
optical encoded disks.
I envisioned young couples in Europe huddled around a two foot high box
of magic made in the USA that held a JBL speaker and maybe a strange
device to crossover the low signals to the woofer and a few other
things. In Europe they are more tolerant of age differences, talking
to strangers or communicating things like your itinerary in hopes of
finding a day partner instead of a legal marriage.
Their foreign lives, some of which was filtered through British pop
music, movies, VHS videos, World War II photos and the like, seemed
like living in a movie set
What mattered was the excitement, the sound and just being alive to
experience it. Now that I am older, I have learned that hearing is the
very last part of the brain to let reality slip away as we go through
our last hours on this earth, and I am reminded of how fitting that is
in a psychological way - our hearing is to our soul as our eyes are to
the world around us - its pleasures, risks, rewards, dangers and
contradictions.
I think that I have designed some of the best stereo and home theater
equipment that there is and collected associates who have done just as
well.
Together we are seeking to build a future that has its roots solidly
based on the proven JBL legacy speaker systems. Many things we are
doing have not been done before, and so, it was an idea that I had to
write about it and sell low cost books so that more people would have
access to the same technological thinking and alternatives that I have
as a designer and buyer and partner in the home theater market over the
internet.
I hope you will enjoy this 33 page book. If you have basic electronic
skills, I hope to inspire new ways that are more reliable and
inexpensive to connect Home Theater Components. Yet, I don't want to
hold the person's head in my hands like I am trying too hard to make it
happen. I always felt that professors are paid to give this kind of
guidance while at the same time knowing full well that their guidance
will be productive, safe and effective - even if it is more or less
unappreciated or viewed as the simplification by process of elimination
that it actually is. But that, is in itself, the lesson history
teaches best. That even that is, inescapable, glamorous.
